NEWSLETTER                  July 2002

Welcome to the fourth edition of the UAVNET newsletter, whose purpose is to promote the advancement of civil UAV activity in Europe.

 UAVNET Meeting #4

A highly successful fourth meeting of the UAVNET thematic network was held on the 23rd / 24th July 2002 at the University of Greenwich, Chatham Shipyards campus, hosted by Bae Systems Rochester England. Interest in the activities of UAVNET has greatly exceeded expectations and over sixty participants from over thirty organisations representing thirteen countries, attended the meeting which has now taken on the semblance of a workshop.

At the two day meeting many presentations were made.

The participants received reports on the progress of its two main projects USICO and CAPECON.  Furthermore, presentations on potential applications were given by guest speakers Laurence ‘Nuke’ Newcome of Adroit Systems of Alexandria VA and Andy Fraser of Integrated Statistical Solutions (ISS).

Mr. Newcome brought the practical side of the agenda into focus by expanding on the comparative costs related to operating UAVs in the power line and communications fields. Mr.Newcome also concluded the conference with a presentation on the challenges facing future commercial UAVs. His lecture provided the listeners with a realistic picture of the hurdles which must be overcome in order to introduce UAVs into the commercial world.

Mr. Fraser spoke about pipeline monitoring, providing facts concerning the tremendous market potential which exists within the fluid pipeline industry for the utilisation of UAVs.

Mr. Mattias Abrahamsson of the Swedish Space Corporation (SSC) gave an in-depth report on the demonstration of the EADS/IAI Eagle MALE UAV which flew at the North European Aerospace Test (NEAT) Range in Sweden from May 21 to June 12, 2002.

An agenda of the meeting appears as Annex 1, and papers presented at the meeting are available for review in the  DOCUMENT LIBRARY of this website (www.uavnet.com).

Photographs taken at the meeting are also available in the Document Library and may be downloaded.

 Schedule for Future Meetings

UAVNET workshops take place approximately every three months for the exchange of information on a broad spectrum of topics covering all aspects of UAVs for civil applications.

The next UAVNET Meeting #5 will be held in Israel on October 30-31, 2002 hosted by Israel Aircraft Industries Ltd. This meeting will be a combined meeting of UAVNET, CAPECON and USICO.  CAPECON and USICO will have working meetings on the two days preceeding the UAVNET meeting.

 Associate Membership

Observers are always invited to attend all UAVNET meetings and regularly receive invitations.  It was decided at the UAVNET Organization Meeting to invite additional organizations to join UAVNET as Associate Partners in order to be involved in the present activities and to potentially participate in the development of new projects for the advancement of civilian UAVs.

Promotion and Dissemination

In the past few months, representatives of UAVNET have made presentations at the following international forums:

·        Dr. Dirk-Roger Schmidt of DLR Germany and Claude Le-Tallec of ONERA France presented a seminar at the International Aerospace Exhibition Berlin in March 2002.

·        Mark Okrent of IAI Israel presented a paper at the 17th Bristol International UAV Systems Conference on 8-10 April 2002.
