May 2002

Welcome to the third edition of the UAVNET newsletter, whose purpose is to promote the advancement of civil UAV activity in Europe.

UAVNET Meeting #3

A highly successful third meeting of the UAVNET thematic network was held on the 29th / 30th April 2002 at Instytut Lotnictwa - Institute of Aviation Warsaw, Poland, hosted by Warsaw University of Technology. Interest in the activities of UAVNET has greatly exceeded expectations and over seventy participants from thirty six organisations representing thirteen countries, attended the meeting which has now taken on the semblance of a workshop.

At the two day meeting various presentations were made. An agenda of the meeting appears below (Annex 1), and papers presented at the meeting are available for review in the DOCUMENTLIBRARY of this website  www.uavnet.com

Additional photographs taken at the meeting are also available in the Document Library and may be downloaded.

Schedule for Future Meetings

UAVNET workshops take place approximately every three months for the exchange of information on a broad spectrum of topics covering all aspects of UAVs for civil applications.

1. The next UAVNET meeting #4 will be held in Rochester England July 23-24, 2002 hosted by BAe Systems. This meeting will coincide with the Farnborough Airshow.

2. A combined  meeting of UAVNET, CAPECON and USICO will be held in Israel during October 2002, hosted by Israel Aircraft Industries (IAI).

Observers are invited to attend all network meetings and invitations will be sent to all interested observers to attend the Workshop portion of all meetings.

Kickoff Meetings

Both CAPECON and USICO will be having their KOM (Kickoff meetings) in May.  CAPECON’s KOM will be taking place in Paris whilst USICO will be meeting in Bremen Germany.  We wish them much success in their endeavours and look forward to hearing reports on their activities at the forthcoming UAV-NET meetings.

Promotion and Dissemination

  • UAV-NET together with Swedish Space Corporation Esrange, EADS and IAI, are co-sponsoring the First European Conference on The Applied Scientific Use of UAV Systems. This takes place in Kiruna Sweden on June 10-11 2002.  The agenda for this Conference is available in the DOCUMENT LIBRARY of this website (see directory "Kiruna"). A report on this conference, together with some photographs, can be seen at the following website :-   www.ssc.se/esrange/pressreleases/index.shtml
  • Mark Okrent, Coordinator of UAV-NET, presented a paper, describing the activities of UAV-NET, CAPECON and USICO at the recent Seventeenth International Unmanned Air Vehicle Systems Conference which took place at the University of Bristol at the beginning of April 2002.
  • At the 1st Technical Conference of the American Institute of Aeronautics & Astronautics held in Virginia USA in May 2002, papers were presented by two members of  UAVNET. Claude Le Tallec of ONERA delivered a paper entitled “VFR General Aviation Aircraft & UAV Flights Deconfliction”, and Prof. Romeo of Turin Polytechnic delivered a paper on the solar powered “Heliplat” project.
  • Representatives of UAVNET have been invited to submit 3 presentations at the forthcoming "UV Civil Symposium" on 17 July 2002 which will take place imediately before Shephard's UV2002 event in London. The presentations are as follows:-

Civil Applications of UAVs - Technological Approach

(Shlomo Tsach - Israel Aircraft Industries)

Demonstration of Eagle UAV for Scientific Research.

(Mattias Abrahamsson - Swedish Space Corporation).

Civil Applications of UAVs - User Approach

(Dr. Dieter Hausamann  - DLR - German Aerospace Center)
